Usually, you buy a total of 3 rings - an engagement and wedding ring for her, which are usually a set, and a wedding band for you that matches her set.
As for how expensive... that depends on the girl! Some girls want large diamonds, some want smaller ones or even other stones. Some girls are OK with lab diamonds, some are not. Some girls might rather have a cubic zirconium ring and put the rest of the money you would have spent towards a downpayment on a house, or the honeymoon, or whatever.
Basically, don't worry about this one until you have someone specific in mind.

It's up to you. Traditionally, a man buys an engagement ring for a woman, but it can be the other way around, or you can both get each other rings, or no rings at all - it's whatever the heck you want to do.

For the people that have said that it's only for the woman, you are so very wrong.
Many, many couples buy each other engangement rings. While I can only attest to the people I personally know and have heard about, it wouldn't surprise me if people have been doing this throughout history. :p Don't be so thick-headed! Lol.
Buying the woman an engagement ring is traditional.

The man buys for the woman. Men typically do not wear engagement rings. Rule of thumb for a ring is two months salary.

When you buy an engagement ring it is from the male to female, most couples only the girl wears an engagement ring (if you look you will usually find that they look girly rings lol).
As to how expensive, that depends on what you can afford and what looks tacky, I allowed my fiancee to pick her ring so I got it right lol.

Normally the woman only wears an engagment ring, thats traditional. But if you want an engagment ring yourself, go for it, it will probably start a new trend. Good luck!

Usually only the female gets an engagement ring. So you'll buy her the ring then you'll both get wedding bands. Cost depends on your budget and what you can personally afford.

The man buys his fiancee an engagement ring. No set rule on the price, but try to get her at least half a carot if you can comfortably afford it, but don't go into debt over it.

You can by a matched set, they're becoming more and more popular these days. Tradition is that the engagement ring is from male to female, but I bought my own ring. :) Do whatever you and your partner are comfortable with.
