any dog can be an excellent family dog with the correct training and responsible owners.
That said, yes, I know a family who had a boxer with young children, and he was always excellent with them.

They are really nice dogs, well suited to a family with older children (not so much younger children since they are rambunctious and large... but even young children could work). I find Boxers to be a real happy go lucky dog thats kind of a weird blend of lots of energy and a real easy going temperament. That said, they do have a lot of health problems. They are very different to Irish Terriers however. Perhaps you might also consider Airedales, Viszla, German Wirehaired Pointing Griffons, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Berger Picard. All highly intelligent dogs with lots of energy (like an Irish Terrier), larger size, amazing family dogs. There are also some fairly rare dogs in this list, where rare often means good health. I am presuming since you had an Irish Terrier and are considering the larger Boxer that you have a decent size property and are able to provide lots of exercise. All the aforementioned dogs require lots of exercise (including boxers).

Yes! Boxers are amazing family dogs. My first boxer was female and she was so mellow especially with my 1 year old at the time he would lay on her and just be a pest and she would just let him, sometimes she would leave the room. Then we had a male boxer who was just as hyper as my son, by this time kid was 3-4 and that dog was gentle also , he would protect his boy and the rest of us he played with my son more than the female and he was really good with the kids.

Temperament

"The character of the Boxer is of the greatest importance and demands the most solicitous attention. He is renowned from olden times for his great love and faithfulness to his master and household. He is harmless in the family, but distrustful of strangers, bright and friendly of temperament at play, but brave and determined when aroused. His intelligence and willing tractability, his modesty and cleanliness make him a highly desirable family dog and cheerful companion. He is the soul of honesty and loyalty, and is never false or treacherous even in his old age."[14]
Boxers are a bright, energetic and playful breed and tend to be very good with children. It's best if obedience training is started early since they also have a strong personality and therefore can be harder to train when older. This, in addition to their strength, might present a challenge for a first-time dog owner. Boxers have earned a slight reputation of being "headstrong", which can be related to inappropriate obedience training. Owing to their intelligence and working breed characteristics, training based on the use of corrections often has limited usefulness. Boxers often respond much better to positive reinforcement techniques such as clicker training. It is also true that Boxers have a very long puppyhood and adolescence, and are often called the "Peter Pan" of the dog world. They are not considered fully mature until two to three years of age, one of the longest times in dogdom, and thus need early training to keep their high energy from wearing out their owner.

The Boxer by nature is not an aggressive or vicious breed, but needs socialization to tolerate other dogs well.[15] Their sometimes over-protective, territorial and dominating attitude, often most intense in males, can be problematic. Boxers are generally patient with smaller dogs but can be dominant with larger dogs of the same sex.

Boxers appear more comfortable with companionship, in either human or canine form. They are very active dogs that need to get a lot of exercise. Lonely boxers can become stressed, leading to destructive behavior

YES! You can not go wrong with a Boxer, especially a female. Some males have dominance issues and are more hyper. BUT wether male or female, Boxers make good watchdogs and great family pets. Despite what some people say they are nothing like Pit bulls, except that their look will intimidate many people. Over all, people love them. You will be a street favorite when you are out walking it.

Depends..if you go to a good breeder, how well you socialize and how well you train them. If you do that you are pretty much guaranteed a good family dog :)
