I know she needs to know things like how to write her name and she needs to know how to recognize her abc's, other than flash cards, how I can I teach her how to write her name? How can I teach her HOW to MAKE letters instead of just random squiggles? Please Help!

I'm sorry I wasn't very clear, but you all have been very helpful anyway. I did not say she didn't know her letters or her numbers, oh yes, she knows them, very well actually, she just can not write them yet. She does have 123 and ABC posters in her room and LOADS of leapfrog toys. I'm not the type of mother who sat back for 4 years and did nothing, in fact she was in early head start AND she was in a program where a "teacher" came to the house and worked with her on all kinds of things. But that ended when she was 3. The only problem I'm having now is actually getting her to MAKE letters instead of squiggly lines. And letter recognition, but I will make little cards and put them around the house, thank you all for all of your help you've been very kind!

Get tha tpaper they use in schools-the kind with the wide lines and the extra guide line in the middle. Model the letter for her. Then let her trace yours. Then she can try on her own. There are loads of workbooks available for this, too. Some introduce the sounds each letter makes, as well. You can try a local teacher store or even Borders. Expect loads of imperfection but make sure to praise her for trying.

The coolest and best way to do this is to get some shaving cream or cool whip. Put it on the table and have her make letters in it. It is sooo much fun! This is what the teachers did at my daughters preschool to get the children to start wanting to write their letters. Good Luck!

1 get a chalk board..or if you are like me and HATE the sound of chalk on a chalk board...get a dry erase board
2. get FUN colors for the dry erase markers
3. You write her name...she copies what you write....keep doing it until she realizes that she is writing her name.
then for the abcs get magnets. every day have her put them in order while you both sing the abcs.
*This is how i actually get my daughter to say letters..she has a speech problem..and when I do this...she grabs the letter and says the letter 'A, B, C, everytime shes right she gets a gold sticker to put on her Chucke Cheese board* (after she gets 1000 stars *which doesnt take long..usually a month n a half* we go to CCS)

go to your local teacher supply school and ask for the practice writting books. It will have point line writting which will teach her to draw the letters properly. You can also take name cars and tape them to items around your house so she will see on a daily basis the letters that make up items in her home

Sit her down, and write the first letter of her name (for example,if her name was Lucy, wrie a L) and have her copy it the best she can. Then the next letter, and the next one. After spelling her whole name, try again later. Hopefully she'll get it one of the other times. Good Luck.

Have you tried getting her to work with things other than pens? Write in sand...on a steamed up window...by making letters from lined up stones....the different parts of the brain which she will use in watching and imitating will speed up her progress. Good Luck!

She's going to kindergarten to learn these things, and shouldn't be expected to know them upon entering.
If she can't yet make letters, that's fine. You can help her to improve her fine motor skills. Fun ways to do this are to play with play-dough, finger paint, lacing cards, practicing buttons and snaps...things like that.
You can also write her name on a dry erase board with permanent marker, then let her trace over it with a wipe off marker.

What the heck have you been doing with her these last 4 years? You start teaching these things to your child as soon as they are born. The TV shows she watches should be educational ones that help teach her these things. Writing isn't going to be a big problem cause believe it or not there are kids who enter kindergarden who have to be taught how to write AND spell their names. You have to work with her now to recognize the alphabet. If she can't sing the ABC song you're gonna have serious trouble. Buy a poster with the alphabet in upper and lower case. Get her some leapfrog learning toys.
