Just tell him you want to keep on a friendship level.

Here is some wise advise. I know asking him straight out if he just wants to be friends is hard (best answer). So, a good idea is to talk to him as a friend and maybe tell him about someone you like (even if the person doesn't exist, remember sometimes you have to tell a small lie to not ubset someone). This will give him a clue that you are consoling in him as a friend and you can also feel out his reaction to see if he likes you. I think though that he will get the picture.

Why can't 2 friends go to the movies together? Ask him if he wants to be friends or more, and then tell him what you think of him.

Suggest that a girl friend or two come with you, and if he doesn't mind then you can keep it in the friendship zone. If he insists, then say that you really really want to be his friend because you think he's an awesome person, just not your type.

Maybe he just wants to spend time with you as a friend... Ask him about it... Or just tell him up front that you aren't interested in a relationship right now, but that you'll be glad to hang out with him just as a friend. Just because you go to the movies with him doesn't mean that you're dating him. And just because he's asked you to go with him doesn't mean that he's asking you out on a date...
