That depends on the type of coloring product you plan to use as well as the condition of your hair.

There are some products that wash out the next day (they basically coat the surface of your hair - can be a little messy if your hair gets wet or if you sweat before you wash it completely out). Other products are semi-permanent (i.e. they last through 6-24 shampooings - check the label on the product). Neither of these types of products will lighten your hair, by the way, so if you want a lighter shade, you will have to go with a permanent product.

Permanent products are just that - some color will still remain even after six months. To turn black hair red, you will probably be using a lightener, and your existing hair will never turn black again, unless you color it back to black. The new growth at the roots will be your natural color, though, so be prepared to do touch up coloring about every 6 weeks. If you want to go back to black, you can dye it back again at any time. Warning though - lightening and coloring your hair is a chemical process and it breaks down the hair structure, resulting in permanent damage, so be careful not to over-process it, or you may end up with your beautiful long hair breaking off and becoming a weak, snarled mess.

One note on the condition of your hair and how it affects the coloring results:
If your hair is very dry, any product will penetrate it more, and so the color will be more obvious on the dry areas. This is especially true when you are comparing the ends of your hair with the roots. In the case with long hair, the ends of your hair will be much more porous than the roots (because the hair is older and has been through more abuse with heat, brushing, etc.), so you may find that the ends of your hair take the color much more than the roots and you will have an uneven result. To reduce this problem, you might condition the ends of your hair (from the shoulders down) before applying the color. (Of course, be sure to rinse out the conditioner out before you apply the color.)

Good luck and have fun with your new look!

I think your biggest problem is going to be what you look like before those six months are up. At some point you are going to have long red hair hanging down attached to a scalp full of black hair which is growing out of your black roots.

I think you will be so upset by that look that you will either cut off all that great (but red) long hair or you will end up dying all of your hair red every few weeks.

Think before you make that color decision.

It depends on if it's permanent or not. If it's not perm, odds are it won't show up well on your dark hair. If it is perm, you're going to a shade pretty far from your natural colorso it may not look how you want it to. Also, if it's permanent, unless your hair is so short it will be regrown in 6 mos the color or at least the bleaching will still be noticable. It's recommended you go to a salon to go more than two shades from your natural color.

If you use semi permant then yes. Or if you don't like it you can always dye your hair black again
