Surprisingly enough most lettuces contain little fiber. One would think it being a plant leaf it would have lots of fiber but it does not.

Other lettuces are similar (e.g. romaine, red & green leaf) but they do put bulk into the stomach and you can eat a huge amount of lettuce and still not have all that many calories.

I have also heard dressings do not adhere as well to iceberg lettuce as they do to others.

As much as I despise the bland, insipid nature of Iceberg lettuce it's actually fairly decent stuff (I prefer Black Seeded Simpson and grow my own). Is it high in water? yes, but it actually contains all essential amino acids (which surprised me) and just over 15% of it's calories come from protein. It's high in vitamin K and has good amounts of A, C and folate. It has decent amounts of most minerals including Iron, Phosphorus, Potassium, Magnesium, Manganese and Calcium. Keep in mind that values showing it's nothing but water and fiber as based on a serving of *one* medium sized leaf! Play with the first link below and see what you get from eating a cup of Iceberg which is a more normal serving for us veggies. Look at what you get from eating a normal 6" head of it! 10% of your protein for the day!! Compare 100g of Iceberg lettuce to 100g of fresh raw apple with skin and see what's better for you. The second link is about juicing Iceberg and the third is very strict data on the amino acid count of lettuce. Is Iceberg Lettuce lame? YEP! But it's a lot better for us than we'd ever suspect. (and all the naysayers should all be given a thumb down but it's broken again)

Iceburg lettuce is a diuretic and can help rid your body of excess water but other than that it has virtually no nutritional value at all. Romain lettuce is a more nurtritious choice.

it is not very nutritious nor does it contain much fiber. an entire head of iceburg lettuce only has 9 grams of fiber which isn't much at all considered whole grains like lentils have 6 grams for only 1/3 cup.

the darker the leaf the more nutrients a leafy vegetable will contain

Iceberg lettuce and celery are just that!! Fiber!! There is absolutely no reason for eating that stuff except as a filler!

Fiber will make you feel more full sooner.
