I went to buy some lumber and I told them that I need some 1 x12s and some 2 x4s. The lumber measured 3/4 x11 1/2 and 1 1/2 x 3 1/2. If we are paying for something, that is what we should get. I feel that we are being charged for stuff that we aren't getting. Do you agree?

thats the way they do it.The 1 x 12 is called a 1 x 12 because before they remove the bark and squared it off it was 1 x12.the same holds true for 2 x 4 ,2x6 etc. whats is reall a rip off is when you got to the home depot and get a 2 x12 and match it up next to a 2 x12 from a good lumber yard you will see the 2 x 12 from the home depot isnt 11 1/8 inches and doesnt match up to the same dimensions of good lumber yards.

It has been this way for many, many, many years. You can get what is called 5/4 (five quarter[s]) boards which means it is a full inch dimension for which you want. But you pay more because as someone else said, the boards are shaved to be uniform.

the lumber is measured before it is dried.... when wood dries it shrinks,in other words it becomes compacted. Youre still getting the 2x4's its just in a different way.
