I am a germaphobe so I would not take any chances. I would wait a week after their feeling better and their symptoms are gone.

For; a sick relative or friend, you should not wait. Most people go to work or school even when sick! Despite what doctors claim, it would be weeks before they are "cleared" of any contagious "bugs". Sometimes doctors refer to it as "reinfecting" oneself.
So, be like Little Red Riding Hood and go visit.

When they are not contagious. although smaller children you have to be more careful
