I imagine that within 30 years, this will be old hat, the religions of the world will have accommodated the knowledge (as you have seen in the above answers), and we will be in the throes of a debate about what kind of life we should not design.

Oddly enough, for the first time, life will in fact have an intelligent designer, but it will have nothing to do with deities.

First of all, I can see how some people might be quite ecstatic to see this. While others will be heart broken. But there are only two simple points:
1. This is at a very early stage. The scientists are still trying to make the cell membrane. After then they will add nucleotides after that they will rely of Darwin's theory to see if it works or not. When this will happen only God knows.

2. Many might consider this to be the end of God and triumph of Atheism. However, this is the contrary. For one it proves that the amount of engineering, calculation and conditions needed for life is beyond probability and required much fine tuning. Even to make the simplest of life forms. So as a believer I would find myself even more keen and excited by this, at least most of the Muslims would.

Man is using resources that are ready are, hence the term resource, to make new life. God made life and everything in the universe out of absolutely nothing. God is the source for everything, man has to use what God has already created to create further. Man cannot create something, anything be it living or non-living, from nothing.

God is the ultimate creator, yes. However, when man creates life, he cooperates with God and His will in bringing more of His children to earth. Creation of human life is the most God-like act a human being can perform.

You mean man will be a creator of a synthetic cell? However, only "God" breathes actual life into the cells of all living things. Man can not do this and won't ever be able to. It'll be a robotic, a form or mechanism, like the article states: synthetic -- a lifeless form.

Friend, God has nothing to worry about and is no danger of being dethroned as Creator. Man cannot start from "scratch". Man always uses material that God already created.

God created man with a brain capable of figuring out the universe. I say that God created man to use it.
