I would get an appraisal from a antiques dealer. If you can't do that, check eBay and see what other swords are going for.

This is something that is difficult to evaluate. I have one from 1812, that was issued on war ships to sailors in time of battle. It has no numbers stamped on it, but may have come from the Constitution. A sword with numbers, and a provenance, or provable story, could be worth several hundred dollars. Then again, if the numbers are a unit designation, and not a serial number, it could change the value, either up or down, depending upon the collector. I'd suggest that you talk to a collector, or inquire at a museum, and get several opinions.

you need to get an appraisal. much depends on condition as how much you can receive. my mother in law deals in civil war memorabilia and the swords can bring a good price but you need an expert appraisal.

With something of that caliber, you may be better served to take it an auction house than trying to see it out right.. If you find a reputable one, you should get the best price possible.

Go to a reputable appraiser for authentication first (and a price range for you). There are alot of fakes out there and no one who would offer you top dollar would buy it without that appraisal.

I'd say take it to an antique shop, one that specializes in guns, to get an appraisal on it. You should call a few antique shops and see what they suggest.
