The file data goes nowhere. Deleting a file under Windows, DOS, etc. causes the _link_ to the file to be lost (marked as usable - undelete uses this information to recover data). The actual data is still there on the hard drive in its original form.

Most filesystems will eventually overwrite the data with something else given enough time, but professionals can still open up the drive in a clean-room environment and recover data because it takes 7-8 re-writes to overwrite old magnetic data. One time, however, is all it takes to prevent tools like Undelete from working.

Daniel has given the correct answer. In the FAT table they are marked empty and in the directory listing the first alphabet is set to a special character so that the dir command will ignore it. The undelete command asks you what the first letter of the file name is after it lists the deleted files. The first letter is deleted and the DOS has no way of knowing it unless you provide it.

The deleted files first goes in the recycle bin if you deleted the file in the recycle bin so it goes in the system restore folder. you can restore it by doing in these ten steps:-

1) click on start.
2) click on programs.
3) click on accessories.
4) system tools.
6) system restore (the system restore windows appers).
7) then click on next.
8) then choose the date when you deleted the file.
9) then click on next.
10) then also click on next.

It doesn't really go anywhere. The data index pointers on the disk are simply morked as available for use. The UNDELETE command only works if none of these index pointers have been used since the "delete" command was issued.
