the military will give additional funds called BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) or BAQ (Basic Allowance for Quarters) to the military member. There are some provisions however.
Your soldier will have to be of a hig enoughrank to be authorized to live in off post quarters.
If he choses to live in government housing on post or near post, then there won't be any additional money for housing or it will be given and taken back out for a break even sort of thing but there will also be no bills for rent and basic utilities such as water, electricity, and gas. He will still get a bill for internet access, phone, and cable or satelite though if he decides to get those services.
The amount he gets for BAH or BAQ will be determined by his rank. The higher his rank, the more money he will get for housing allowance. You can look on line here
http://usmilitary.about.com/od/housingallowance/a/bahenldep.htm
click on the state and toward the bottom of the next screen will be a chart with the areas in the state near military bases or posts with the rate per month and increasing by pay grade from left (E-1) TO RIGHT (E-9).
You can also check out

and get answers to other questions you may have for pay, and military issues.

You get money for housing in the form of BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing). That varies depending on where your DH is stationed and what rank he is.
You usually have a couple of options to spending your BAH. You can choose to live on base/post. More and more that means you'll hand your entire BAH over to a civilian company that runs the housing for that base. Sometimes your BAH covers everything but phone and cable. But more and more places are moving over to having you pay for electricity and other utilities like April said.
Your other choice is to find a place in the civilian community. If you're careful you can find a place where most of your BAH goes to rent and the rest covers (or almost covers) your utilities. If you're not careful you can end up paying a lot to cover the rest of the rent and all of the utilities out of your base pay.
If you choose to live out in town then you want to make sure your lease includes a military clause. This clause will let you get out of your lease in the case that your DH is transferred more than a set number of miles away. You want to be certain that the wording is correct.
I know in the Navy they prefer that you check in at the base housing office before you rent because they'll keep a list of places where service members have had problems. For the base I'm at now, when we first moved here, there were apartments on the "Do Not Rent" list because they had so many problems and ones that you could rent from but you had to go in knowing that they pushed the absolute letter of the law in what they could charge you if you broke a lease even using the military clause. It's also recommended that you take the lease to either the housing office or Legal/JAG to get it checked if you're at all unsure or new to the process.
BTW, all of this only applies to service members and spouses. They don't have any protections for girlfriends in case that was your next question.

A military clause is a section written into a rental agreement that states if the soldier is deployed he/she can cancel the rental agreement without any penalty. However, because you are not yet a military dependant (spouce of the soldier) you do not qualify for this program. Your soldier does. As for the housing costs he will need to talk to his units S1 and set up his BAH (Basic Allowance for Houseing), he's still entitled to it while he is deployed. I hope he stay safe!

I want to add to what others are saying. Yes, if you live on Post you won't receive your BAH because it will be deducted from your account; HOWEVER depending on what Post you're fiance' is stationed at you may end up paying for electricity and water, now. Our Post just started that this past year; and there are a few others that are doing it, too. In a few years, all Army Posts will be that way. How it works is, you get an allotment for electricity and water and if you go over your allotment you have to pay the difference. Too many people were wasting to much electricity and water because they had a "I don't pay for it, so who cares" attitude and it was costing a lot of money. The Armed Services are scraping money wherever they can get it, and this was a major area for them to fix.

Hello! The army will give you a housing allowance (called BAH), and it will vary depending on where you live. It usually helps out with the price of a small/med. apartment, possibly with some left over for utilities. If you choose to utilize base housing, then you get no BAH, but you live rent/utility free. You pay for cable/phone. I hope this helps! Best of luck to you. I love being an army wife!

You get a military housing cost if you live off post, if you live onpost yu don't get it, but you get on post housing for free (they give you a house to live in) you will get free electric, and heating, but you pay for your phone (if i remember right- I have lived off post for 14 years now) and your cable. You get an ID card that will get you into the gyms and the commissary and the PX, but you must have your hubby fill out the right paperwork, an 1172 (after you have gotten married) so he can add you to his DEERS. If you are appying for living on post there is usually a waiting list and as soon as you can get on it, the better, but you must, of course get married, to get on it. If you are living of post, you will need to get a post sticker for your car, once you are married, so you don't have to wait in the inspection line to get on post (so you can go tot he commissary or PX) . If you are a foreign bride, that is a differant matter, i can't help you there, I am not familiar with the paperwork to get you started.

The Army either will supply you with on-post housing, or you will be paid BAH. Which stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. BAH varies from place to place, and between different ranks.
