I'm scared to death of thunderstorms and I'm looking for somewhere to go to college. Don't tell me "this is a good place" etc. I want my question answered. I already picked 5 places.

ALL states have thunderstorms to some degree.

If you don't like thunderstorms then you definitely need to stay away from any state where the moist air fronts from the Gulf of Mexico meets the cold air fronts from Canada - and that is just about anywhere East of the Rocky Mountains!

From my experience, the place that has the fewest thunderstorms would be Southern California. Storms do happen on occasion, but nothing like those elsewhere in the country and not as severe.

The farther south you go, the fewer storms there are. San Diego, having the least amount of rain in the state, with the exception of the deserts, would be the place to avoid thunderstorms.

I love a good thunderstorm and always thought Texas had the best, but then I moved to Florida. Good grief! Every single day during the summer it's rock 'n roll time! Not only that, the heat which was hot in Texas, became a sauna in Florida. After two years of that, I moved back to Texas where the summers feel like they're air conditioned and the thunderstorms are somewhat mild. You can't be a sissy and live in Florida!

Any place known for tornadoes will also be a good spot for lots of thunderstorms. With that in mind the plains states are going to be among some of the worst spots.

Tornado Alley - Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas certainly have the largest and most violent storms. Florida is known as the lightning capital of the US. It storms usually every day there, but they are short lived.

Oklahoma has the most, but they do the most damage in desert states (where they set off forest fires) ... CA, NV, UT, ID, primarily.

This week it's Richmond, VA. We had 36,000 lightning strikes in just four hours on Thursday night.
