Hi,
I hope someone can help. I go to the gym around 3-4 times a week, and have recently started to get hard dry skin on the palms of my hands at the base of my fingers. Its only started since I started using the rowing machine about a month ago. Has anyone got any tips on how to prevent or reduce this??

Thanks!!

To reduce this accumulation of callus tissue on your hands, try using foot creams which are designed to remove the hard dry skin on feet. These can usually be found at the chemist shop.

To prevent, get some weight lifing gloves, or some gloves designed for scullers from a shop which retails rowing equipment.

I had the same problem when sculling at Uni.

Gym Hands

As long as you will practise gym the hard skin will be formed and remain their, it is a natural protection for your hand skin against continuous friction between your hand and the gym tool that you are using.

Friction will create heat, different stresses on you skin and blood vessels, and the body defend itself by forming a hard skin as a shield that protects further damage to your skin.

Use talc powder, it helps a lot in reducing rough friction, you will feel that you hands are slipping on the gym tool because the talk is lubricating the friction are, you will get used to it after few days.
Also use soothing and moisturising cream after every practise will help in softening the hard skin.

of course what she's doing is good and healthy. that's basically what i do and i'm 5'6 and i weigh 117. i'm also 17. i've always been really disciplined with myself, so to me being unhealthy isn't even an option. but for someone who isn't used to having this lifestyle might have a hard time with it. especially if you drink and smoke like you say you do, you might have a hard time cutting back and living a healthier lifestyle. and i completely agree with her about water and sleep, those are two of the most amazing things for looking good and being healthy. "beauty sleep" is not a myth. it sounds she eats a lot of protein too, and obviously not bread and sugar, so of course she has a great body. it's impossible to be overweight when you do what she does. i think you should give it a try, you sound really unhealthy. you can't even take a kickboxing class without having to stop and rest all the time? that's sad. exercise more!!

wear gloves is the most common way, you could also moisturise regularly and get a pumice stone i think its called to file the skin away. dont pick at it as this will make it worse. keep moisturising with whatever you do and you should have normal enough hands again soon

Put some Baby oil on them at night and sleep with a sandwich bag on your hand and the hard skin will be better.

What is wrong with hard skin on your hands? I have always had this through working with tools and it can be a very good thing to have.
