The guy in question is a colleague. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but he isn't so polite about holding doors open etc. But always on an escalator -- maybe because the height difference on an escalator would be ideal if he was staring at my rear.

If he isn't so eager to be chivalrous with doors, letting you have the "right of way" in the employee parking lot, or doing other polite, chivalrous things around your work, chances are that he's being so kind to you on the escalator for the simple fact that you're above him and it's sneaky for him to glance or even stare at your behind.
I'd say, "No, you go, :]" next time he tries it.

It depends on the direction the escalator is going. Proper etiquette calls for the gentleman to go down stairs in front of a lady and up stairs behind a lady so he can break her fall if necessary (the same applies to escalators).

He's being polite. A man should allow a woman to go first UP stairs or an escalator. He should go before her DOWN the stairs of escalator. This is so, if she should happen to stumble, he will be there to catch her. It's called respect.

I hate it when girls think that , you feel like saying ok next time i wont bother but then you feel obnoxious for not being polite. personally if i want to look at your **** i would just do it, i don't need to hold a door or let you take the lift first its just a waist of time when i can just use my eyes to look when you "conveniently" walk past. so the answer to the question is if its a thing he always dose he's just being polite if its something out the blue he's a looser and making polite men look bad.

I HATE when guys do this. I can always tell which ones are doing it to get a look. Men are disgusting. For the most part.
Edit: Reading some other answers, the girls who are bi*ching at you for it are either ugly and havent had anyone check them out demeaningly, or sluts, the kind that make those sleazy men think its okay to do that. Besides, most of the guys here admitted to it. I think you'd be smart enough to know if it was really a genuinely nice guy, if so, he would be consistent with his "etiquette" and open doors for you all the time too.

A gentleman will always let a lady go up the stairs and escalator. If you feel uncomfortable with this either use (clean) underwear or while on the escalator turn sideways towards him.

Etiquette says a man is supposed to follow when going up and to lead when going down ( In case she falls or slips ) If he has no manners then hes checking your butt ( That should be a complement )

Out of all honesty: No he's probably just being a gentlemen I'm sure that if a guy is trying to look at your butt they would just look at it some other way. Don't always think somebody tryna look at you because half the time thats not tha case. Lose the ego and you will be less paranoid.

it may be that he wants to stare,or he was trying to be polite with you,but whatever it is,dont put this as an issue,dont bother such person if he really is that bad,but if he is not,mantain the relationship and strive towards success of the company,thats all.
