Hi,

I've been invited to a black tie event but don't want to go rent a tux because it's out of town and I would need to rent it for several days therefore it would cost me a fortune (I don't have time to pick it up in the city where the event is).

I don't wear a suit for work but I need to wear one several times this year and mine atre all getting old so I thought it would be a good opportunity to refresh my wardrobe.

Will I look out of place in a black suit? I know that a cousin of mine and my sister's boyfriend will also be wearing suits. Will we be sticking out like three sore thumbs?

Normally I wouldn't really care but the occasion is for a very close relative of mine so I don't want to reflect badly on her.

Thanks,
DT

Firstly, why don't you ask the relative in question? If she doesn't mine, it's OK.

Now, what does the invite say? If it's "strictly black tie", you have no option. You might want to buy the tux. If you go to more than five or so black tie events, you'll save money.

If it's "black tie optional", you can wear a suit. Make sure it's dark, but black probably isn't good. It'll look like you have a tux suit but forgot the bow tie. Try dark blue. (Especially if you're buying a new one -- a dark blue suit is *the* most flexible item in a gentleman's wardrobe -- it can be worn at anything from a party to a funeral -- just change the accessories.)

If the invite just says "black tie", it's up to you. Play safe and wear a tux, or take a (probably small) risk and wear a suit.

Maybe rent the tux in the city that you are visiting,(give measurements via phone or e-mail) have a relative pick it up for you prior to you getting there.

a "Black Tie" event calls for a tux. Please take the time and money to wear one. You will look and feel out of place if you do not do so. Have fun.

If the event is "black tie" then it means exactly that. Tuxedo rentals are not that expensive.
