I am an amature artist with a passion for what I do. I am looking to exhibit and (hopefully) sell some paintings but do not know where to begin. Are there any amature markets or gatherings of similar people with similar ideas? any help would be great.Thanks.

You could join a local Art Society they usually hold exhibitions, in fact you can join as many as you like.
You can also book yourself some space in a library as some do have little one man shows. Ask restaurants if they would display your work or galleries they usually take a commission of between 25/40% which you must put into the costing of your work plus cost of materials and time it took to paint your masterpiece.
You can use ebay or other web sources a good one is
www.artistcardsandprints.co.uk
they sell originals if you want to sell them and prints and operate the site for you.
and there are other companies that offer that service.
Good luck

A good internet-based art gallery, which deal with new artists, is www.newbloodart.com. Email them and see if they'll add your art work. This website do take a small comission if you sell your work, but they provide a service that you would not be able to achieve on your own.

There are some small towns around London that have fairs where you can exhibit. There are also some small auctions that might take your work.

i would get a good digital camera and an eBAY account.

Art fairs have limited traffic, eBay has several million users

For networking purposes certainly find local venues for your work, but give eBay a try
