I was 16 in 1969 and bought a 1964 Plymouth Belvedere for $500. It had an 8-track tape player suspended on the bottom of the dash board by a bracket and would wiggle and shake when I drove on bumpy roads.
Gas prices were much lower.
I could fill the 18 gallon gas tank with $4

My dad was a mechanic.
Some fella took his old T reg mini in for repairs and then he said he couldn't afford the bill.
My dad had told him that the repairs were worth more than the car but the guy insisted on all this work being done as he loved it.
He asked my dad if he wanted the car, he didn't particularly as he made a huge loss on it.
Then Daddy had a brain wave. He gave the car to me!
Result, 1 happy daughter. I was 19.

The year was 1972, and I was 16 years old. I'd been driving my Dad's old 1959 Ford Galaxie to work. Mom and Dad went out shopping while I was at work one Saturday and came back with a black 1962 Ford Fairlane Sports Coupe. It cost me $200.00, and I immediately had to put on a set of tires, so I guess you could say it cost me just under $300.00, and later another $100.00 for a paint job.
I kept it 8 years and sold it for $250.00 to get money to get married. I should have kept the car and let the woman go.

When I graduated high school, my parents gave me a Pontiac Sunfire. I had picked it out as a car I really liked, and they got one that was just over a year old, so it was not brand new. I kept it for about 5 years, and then bought myself a car when I was 22.

21, it was a bright yellow 1972 Ford Pinto Hatchback. It only cost $400.00. It had a hole in the floor board that I had to make sure I covered with my foot before I went through a puddle or I got sprayed right in the face! Loved that car!

17 yrs old. A Cadburys metallic purple citroen AX Spree- with only 4 gears.
£10 petrol lasted me a month in that little thing!
Borrowed it to my Mum for a while; it was raining- she didn't put in the petrol cap because she was getting wet. Drove home and forgot to put the cap back in. It stood for 4 months over the british winter- when I came back for it in spring- the car had eroded away completely underneath. Gutted!

I "BOUGHT" my first car when I was 14. I wasn't old enough to drive, but my aunt had a cherry 1964 Impala SS she wanted to replace. My dad bought it from her for $300 and I had to pay him back by the time I was 16 in order to drive it. I mowed lawns to earn the $300 to repay my dad. It was in 1973.
