Unsalted butter but if I only have salted butter than I omit the pinch of salt part of the recipe.

Unsalted. You wouldn't want a birthday cake's frosting to taste salty, would you?

Unsalted butter is a better choice because most recipes already call for salt to begin with. While salt does lend flavor in a recipe, it is also a chemical. Baking, while a delicious activity, is actually an exact science (down to the last 1/8 tsp). Salt is usually added to aid in a chemical reaction between baking powder in certain recipes that require the batter/dough to rise. (Look at a container of baking powder and you'll see it says "Double Acting." It reacts with both wet ingredients and proper chemical ingredients) So if you were to go and add extra salt to the recipe, it's not going to make the reaction anymore potent. It's just going to add more salt flavor.

If you're baking at home and youre only making one cake, fine, go ahead and use salted butter. But if you were going to make a cake that feeds 100, unsalted is the way to go. People can and will tell the difference.

I have used both, so I use whatever I have on hand. The person who said it will be too salty is incorrect, because I have used it, and there was no salty taste in the cake. Yes, if the recipe states unsalted, then you should follow the recipe, but there have been times when I just did not have any unsalted butter and so I used what was in the fridge. I would not use salted butter in the butter-cream though, you would notice a difference then.

Sweet. You can use salted, but it will lincrease the overall salt in the batter.

I usually cook with sweet butter unless a recipe specifically calls for salted

I use the unsalted one because I think that it's sweet enough without any butter so I think salted nore sweetened butter should go on a cake! But unsalted butter should!
Hope that helps!

Unsalted butter. Otherwise the salt in the butter can make your cakes taste funny.

It depends on the cake, but most of the time regular salted butter!

Most recipes I have ever used call for unsalted butter. So I really wouldn't use either salted or sweetened butter.

Go with unsalted butter. Salted butter is salted to preserve it and you will find fresher butter unsalted.
