My little nephew is such a sweetheart but just won't let anyone near his hair to cut it, so it is getting long and messy! What advice does anyone have to stop all the crying fits every time anyone goes near his hair - with anything, not just scissors! They have tried bribery but to no avail!

My son is 3 and is the same, what we do is get a toy in advance something he really wants (within reason) then I show him the toy and tell him he only gets to play with it if he gets his hair cut, I put a wee stool in the middle of the floor in front of the TV for distraction, I put a hole in a bin liner and put it over his head on top of his shoulders as he gets really upset when any hair falls on him, then I keep talking to him telling him how brave he is and how lovely he's going to look, then go for it, you really need to be quick though.

It does take a bit of persuading even with the toy so have plenty of time, once you get him on the stool your pretty much there!

I buy second hand stuff on eBay especially for hair cut days!

Hope this helps we still have tears and tantrums we just keep with the persuading and he finally comes round, remember to keep the toy where he can see it but can't touch it.

Good Luck!

Maybe scissors won't be the best thing for a toddler who's pitching a fit. I use an electric razor (actually, battery operated one) and at first he didn't like the sound but after a few times he realized it was okay.

Put him in a high chair so he can't escape, one of you hold him and the other just get it over with as quickly as possible. When it's done, give him his favorite whatever and tell him how well he did.

You could also try a professional if you just can't handle the tears.

Sit the child on his dad's lap while his dad gets his hair cut. The easiest thing for my son was to shave it all off the first time so he knew no matter how short it was it wouldnt hurt although not many parents are up to just shaving it off. If he watches dad's hair get cut then he should for more at ease. Also you can have him brush his own hair and then try and do it for him. Occasionally you just have to suck it up and have someone hold his head still while he gets his hair cut.

Just cut it and get over the tears.

2 year olds are not capable of complicated cognitive behaviour. Which means offering a reward before hand is not really going to work.

It is better to cut his hair. Not too short, just a bit.

Then take his photo with a digital camera. Say..wow good looking.

Then move on. When you obsess over something with young children they will become more and more upset. If you move onto something else they stop crying in a few minutes.

OK now put yourself in the child's shoes, mum and day have always told him not to touch scissors as they are sharp and they will hurt you,,, suddenly mummy comes towards him with a great big pair of scissors....

Take him to a hairdresser that is able to deal with children, my son was exactly the same and this lovely hairdresser had toy dinosaurs and cars to keep him distracted...

good luck

take him to a professional.. they are trained in handling kids who dont want their "hair touched". They worked wonders in cutting my best friends sons hair.. he may fuss, but if they get involved with the kid, and even allow him to "help", then he may not cause such a fuss.
