He'll probably go with tripping over his own feet and babbling at the wrong volume level.

If he manages not to do that, then "hi" or "hey" might be the simplest ones for a shy guy to get out without embarrassing himself. Exactly which of those they choose depends on where he was brought up and what context you met him in, but really it's unlikely to make a difference.

Guys that are not shy could try anything. Part of not being shy is not being afraid of the consequences of saying something stupid, so they might try stupid things just in case they work.

If a guy is Kewl he will say Hi.... but a guy trying to act cool would say hey.. like the Fonze.

Just the point of view of a person who speaks English as a second language (I'm Brazilian, my first language is Portuguese): Both are nice, but "hi" sounds more formal, and "hey" sounds more warm and friendly. :)

There's no point in trying to act cool. He either is cool, or he is not. If he's not, he better improve, not pretend. :)

Your question is sort of pointless. It usually isn't hard to tell when someone is pretending to be something they aren't. To answer the question though, there is a lot more to the conversaton than the greeting.
