normally maternity pay is when you have worked for your employer for more than 12 weeks before you are pregnant, maternity allowance is if you are with a new employer but you have to of paid enough national insurance for the past two years, i think its something like 44 weeks have to be paid. but if she didn't have enough stamp paid she would not get it but you can pay up your stamp that you have missed then she should get it!

if by maternity allowance you mean the $4000 one of payment you receive after bubs is born, then yes i thought every parent/guardian was entitled to it, its a non tax payment that is not effected by earnings or anything. your friend should ask the tax department they are the ones that deal with that payment even though you apply through centrelink.
knowing the government she was probably told to fill out the wrong form.lol. otherwise i dont know why either. call the tax dep'

If you cant afford the 6 weeks off , maybe you shouldnt be having children, why does everyone expect to be suppored.
If you work for your employer long enough some employers pay for paid maternity leave.
It must not be a united states question................. It helps if you state where your from, the US is less giving to pregnant and new mothers then other places in the world.....

As far as I knew, everyone was entitled. Maybe because of outstanding debts to centrelink?? or they aren't an australian citizen or have been here less than 2 years.
They should just ring and ask.

Men are not entitled to maternity allowance - which answers your initial question.
And if your friend was turned down, it seems that not every woman is entitled to it either.
Your friend should ask why she was turned down.

no, it is not an automatic thing to get...it will depend on her specific employer and what their policy is, but it is not required
