The term "Scandinavian countries" isn't used to refer to all Nordic countries (Iceland, Faroe Islands, as well as Finland may be Nordic but not always Scandinavian countries), and is not exactly the same as Scandinavian Paeninsula (Denmark is not in the Scandinavian Paeninsula, but it is usually considered a Scandinavian country, while Russia has territory in the Paeninsula, and is never considered a Scandinavian country).

So, strictly speaking, only Denmark, Norway and Sweden are "Scandinavian countries", while Finland, Iceland and Faroes might be included in its widest sense of "Nordic countries".

The word comes from Late Latin Scandinavia, a mistake for Scadinavia, from a Germanic source (cf. O.E. Scedenig, O.N. Skaney "south end of Sweden"), from P.Gmc. *skadinaujo "Scadia island," first element of uncertain origin, second element from *aujo "thing on the water," from PIE *aqa- "water", as in Latin aqua.

Edit: Norway, Iceland and Faroes are not in the EU, but they are indeed "invited" (it's not like Turkey, whose membership is discussed) - Norway was supposed to enter with Finland in 1995, but Norwegians rejected the entry in a referendum. Iceland and Faroes have never applied, but (along with Norway) maintain special relations to EU member states because of some common international treaties. Also, Denmark rejected the euro, and Swedish people rejected it in a referendum. Scandinavian countries may be thus considered the most eurosceptic member states after the UK.

Denmark and Iceland are Scandinavian countries as well. The former belongs to the EU, but I'm not sure about the latter.

Sweden, Norway and Finland make up the Scandinavian region.

Sweden and Finland are members of the EU. Norway is not.

Scandinavian means countries north of the Baltic sea. Try Google Earth to find out where that is. Then you can try Google to find out the EU member states. You obviously have Internet access - use it! It's great!
