Shortening is pretty much butter. You won't get very good results with your pie shell using anything other than butter. If you have it, I guess you could substitute it for margarine.
Good luck and have a great day/night!!!

Is there an alternative to shortening?

I live in Germany, and have no idea where to get shortening, so I use butter when recipes call for shortening-everything tastes better, so I don´t care for shortening anymore.

Depends on what you are making - breads can be made without shortening

There are many alternatives (fats, oils, vegoils etc) but they have different melting points

Lard (clean bacon fat) is the classic for pastry shells! Butter never yields the best results. Either way, make sure the lard or butter or coconut oil (another surprisingly healthy, good option) is VERY COLD when you start cutting it into the dry ingredients.

You are wise to eschew shortening!

Depends if your objective is health or taste.
Butter will taste better.
Vegetable shortening is your healthiest option.
Oil will not work well for pastry.
