Hello

My partner was prescribed co-codamol painkillers, after bruising his ribs. He stopped taking the tablets on Sunday and since then has had a very severe headache. He said that it feels like a throbbing pain- i asked if it could be a migraine but hes never had one so he couldnt tell me?

Could this be a side effect of the co-codamol?

HI...

I unfortunately had to take Co-Codamol for a month... I stopped last week... On friday...Ever since Ive had a killer headache, also feeling slightly achey.... Its an opiate derivative..As in Morphine/heroin...although a lesser dose..It does bring on the withdrawal feelings users get...

But its good he stopped cos it can become addictive...He may also have found constipation was another side effect, again, if he justs eats plenty of fibre this will resolve...

Ive taken codiene loads cos Ive had tumours and had to take them post-op lots...

Try some hedex or paracetamol to relieve these symptoms, but be assured, it's normal...

Oh yes most definitely. It can also make you feel very sick its the amount of codine in the tablet that makes you get headaches. Tell him to go back to the doctor and ask for co-dydromol instead as these have less of a codine content but the same strength pain killer. Hope this helps

Yes there can be side effects from this drug.I would get in touch with your doctor if I was you. They side effects can be many things including constipation, which can cause headaches!. They contain parcetamol and codeine. Some people can be allergic to codeine or paracetamol. Hope this helps.

Definitely - I had to take cocodamol after an operation on my knee and I had the same awful headaches!

If he is in pain and can take paracetamol and ibuprofen then he could switch to them (though ibuprofen shouldn't be taken for days on end). These two tablets are quite safe to take together.....I was told by a friend of the family (who is a paramedic) to do this.

Analgesic rebound headaches are common and should resolve quickly. However, the only way to get past them is to not take any analgesic for them, ie paracetamol etc... Tell him to lie in a darkened room with soft sound (music) and a cloth over his head/eyes. He will probably awaken without the headache.
