If it were a true accident, and the person was truly sorry, a sorry would be o.k. for me. If it is was negligence such as speeding, etc that would be different. If my dog wandered into the street and got hit and the car was not speeding it would be a true accident and actually the fault would lie on me for letting him run loose.

This happened to my brother's dog. She got out and was in his trash can. She freaked when a big truck drove by and darted out. Now our Miss molly is buried in front of the house. She was an English Bull dog and cost my brother quite a bit of money but in the end it was always about missing her...NOT THE MONEY. The neighbor that hit her stopped and infomed my brother. She had died rather quickly. What more can you ask for? Accidents happen and sometimes there is not much anyone can do. My brother holds no grudge against the neighbor and is thankful for being notified right away. Everyone misses Molly and we hope she is in peace!!!

If it truly is an accident then I would leave it at that. But if it were the fact that I let my dog out without a leash or not putting them in a fenced in yard and they were hit by a car than I would be the person at fault. Thats why we have leash laws.

I would want monetary compensation. Dogs are property so you cannot collect for the dog's pain and suffering but you can for your pain and suffering over the loss of the dog. You can collect for the value of the dog, the market value to replace your dog and anything you had in the dog such as spay or neuter.
Accidents do happen but those who cause them need to compensate their victims or survivors of their victims.
If they won't give you money take them to court.

I would probably kill them before I had a chance to think of what I'd want them to do.

I'm not sure. I wouldn't want them to buy me another dog, because I wouldn't want a "replacement," but maybe they could... do something. If they weren't sorry/apologetic I would probably ask them for money to the value of the dog or something. Not that you can put a value on your dog.

Depends on the person, really....
For me, I wouldn't want the person to feel obligated for killing my dog..it would already be bad enough for them, would it?

Well it depends on how they killed it. If they accidentally ran it over I would at least expect them to knock on my door & own up rather than leaving it out on the road for me to find when I got up to go to work like someone did with my cat last year.

if it would be up to me, i would let them buy me a new(and cute) dog. but if they really felt bad about what they've just done and are apologizing sincerely to you, maybe it's just best to forgive them..but the memory of your good ol' dog will give you a big ol' wound in your heart...but most of all, follow your heart and you can decide when to forgive them..
