Cancer is caused when the DNA in cells mutate.

Sometimes these mutations are genetically linked.

More often they are caused by a variety of mutagens and carcinogenic substances we encounter throughout our lives.

UV rays are just one of these factors.

Most types of cancer become more common as we get older. This is because the changes that cause a cell to become cancerous in the first place take a long time to develop. There have to be a number of changes to the genes within a cell before it turns into a cancer cell. The changes can happen by accident when the cell is dividing. Or they can happen because the cell has been damaged by carcinogens and the damage is then passed on to future 'daughter' cells when that cell divides. The longer we live, the more time there is for us to accumulate these genetic mistakes in our cells. UV rays gives out radiation it really dont alter your DNA besides destroying it.

Ultraviolet light is one of the causes of cancer in particular skin cancer. UV light is at one extreme of electro-magnetic radiation. The radiation can excites DNA molecules in the skin cells causing distortion of its helix, mutations and finally cancer.
The situation is of concern for caucasians as the lighter skin lacks melanin. Melanin helps to block UV penetration and thus prevents damage to deeper skin layer. This is the reason why skin cancer is more common in caucasian population compared to coloured or blacks.
As an alternative, always put on your sunscreen lotion whenever you are outside in the sun. Always look for lotions with the appropriate SPF rating.
