Yes,dogs have very good memories.I had a pup once, who I gave to some friends of my brother. The dog lived across town, but everytime she had the chance, she would run away and come back here. They moved several times, but she would still find her way to our house. Then,I didn't see her for quite a long time, close to a year.Someone told me that her owners were not taking care if her,so I went to their house to see,and she was in a pitiful state, skin and bones, with worms and a bad skin problem, tied to a doghouse. She went crazy, crying and jumping on me.Needless to say,I told her owners what I though, and said I was taking the dog back, and they didn't protest. They moved to California, then, but years later, when they divorced and the man moved back, she remembered him, too, and loved him, even though he had treated her badly. He was sorry ,though, and when she died at age 15,he helped us dig her grave.

I breed mastiffs and on many ocassions I have met a mastiff that I bred and had not seen the dog since it was 8 weeks old . As soon as the dog smells me it goes crazy . The part of a dogs brain that remembers smell is 10 times larger then the visual part of the brain , So dogs remember smells better then vision , this is why a dog can rember someone who has changed their looks or aged a lot since they last seen them . the dog may bark at them at first but as soon as they smell the person they remember them.

yes, MANY years ago we had a dog and when we had to give him up. ( to someone we knew very well, but didn't get to see often). We went there one day and their friend was there and said not to pet the dog because he didn't like strangers. I went right over to him and he wagged his tail and was fine. It had been a long time since i'd seen him.

he sure can . especially if he was a miniature schnauzer. if they had a very special friendship that dog will miss his old master. he can suffer separation anxiety, usually detected by loss of appetite in eating (and others) . but sometimes, as young puppies, they can easily adapt. it can '' depend''.
