It's a little known fact that dogs are very superstitious. They kill rabbits to have a rabbit foot charm. They chase black cats to run off the bad luck. And they roll in the grass to cover themselves with four leaf clovers. Dogs turn three times because it was agreed on long ago at the Dog Council of Dresden in 756AD. It is said that Rover of York submitted the number based on the fact that Cerberus, the dog who protected the gate to Hades, had three heads.

In the wild they do it to be sure to take a look at the surroundings. They are taking note of where everything is and being sure that they have adequate protection to there backs so things cant sneak up on them easier. Also if they are sleeping in grasses or in dirt it pats down the area to make it more comfortable.

Mine always did that too. I think most dogs do. Maybe they are looking around for enemies or just trying to get a comfortable position.

Why did you put this in "cooking and recipes?" That's weird. Anyway, it's possible that dogs do this to flatten their sleeping area to make it more comfortable.
