It is an occupation. The people that work this job go around intervening people on things they think are "Cool" and "Trendy".
Based on these answers they get a feel for new trends. I don't know how good the pay is. This is how the fashion places and MTV and such get the stuff that every one wants. That is the basically what they are and what they do.

(Trendspotter or trend watcher) Yes, it's an occupation but it's more serious than just asking people what they think is going to be cool. If it's a serious trend watcher, he or she will put a lot of time in extensively researching what products, colors, styles etc. sell best to which.

Big compagnies producing 'trendy' products either have employees doing this or hire agencies, specialised in this. Since over the years more and more products are looked at as trendy, this is becoming more and more importent, even to products that in the past weren't considered a subject of fashion. Computers for example.
