There, there... the bible confuses a lot of people. See, the men wrote/assembled it were fairly primitive and their intent wasn't to educate, it was to control! You have to realize being that it is man-made they it can have flaws or be defective altogether. Hopefully on day, with some logic and research you'll be free of the bible and the guilt it intends to consume you with!

If you read the old testament and new testament, it all flows together. Jesus said that He didn't come to abolish the old testament but to fulfill it.
You have to understand the nature of God and who He is to understand the things in the OT. God is perfect and cannot stand imperfection. Each sin must go punished. Which I guess is why the OT seems so harsh. But from the OT, God had a plan to reconcile the human race back to himself.
The new covenant which is found in the New Testament basically talks about a salvation found only through His grace and not by works. I'm going to try break it down real simple:
God is perfect in every facet of perfection, meaning, He is perfect love, mercy, grace, justice, etc. God cannot stand sin in His presence and sin must go punished. But God is mercy, and isn't mercy forgiving someone of something they don't deserve forgiveness for? But to not punish someone for a sin is injustice. So God is in a dilemma. How does one solve? He judged us to death. We were the ones that were suppose to be on that cross. After making that judgement, He stood up, and said "I'll pay the fine" and went up the cross Himself. He judged us justfully, and paid the price for us, which is mercy.
That's basically the story behind the cross in a nutshell. I know there are questions to grab from the above, eg, Can an infinite God crucify himself? What do you mean God crucified Himself? It was Jesus... etc. All are answerable. But I trust that you will seek the truth and find the answers =)
I am truly amazed at the atheists responses. How irrational they are. How do you reply to a topic that you know nothing about? And are so apathetic in persuing?

Sorry that you are so confused. Maybe this will help.
The Bible is God's written Word to us.
It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit.
“Above all you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:20-21. (New International Version)
Breakdown of the Bible
36 human authors inspired entirely by God over 1600 years.
66 separate books
39 Old Testament
Genesis- The creation of the world, sin, flood and birth of Israel
Exodus to Esther- History of the nation of Israel
Job to Proverbs- the books of poetry and wisdom
Isaiah to Malachi- Prophecy or foretelling of the future events to come.
27 New Testament
Matthew to John - Four Gospels representing the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ now with all authority in Heaven and earth.
Acts- Birth of the Church (The Bride of Christ)
Romans to Jude - Letters to the Churches
Revelations - The ultimate future plans for: The Church, Heaven, Hell, a New Heaven and a New Earth.

I am about to make some enemies here but you ask a question that I asked years ago. Here goes nothing.
Neither! Alot of research has gone into this answer so hear me out. Neither is bad or wrong, however, it was interpreted by man, humans and the 'church' so some of the teachings have been turned or twisted.
Our Creator is love. Only Love! He/She does not punish us or hurt us. We are his (my preference) children and even if the choices we make disappoint, hurt or ignore this. Or if our chosen religious path call him/her Jahovah, Yaway, Allah, Goddess, Father... whatever, Our Creator gave us and everything that ever has been or ever will be, are his children. We are loved no matter what. Even if we or others think we do not deserve to be loved. Unconditionally.
It come to choices that have been made through history and the choices we make as individuals.
Look at it this way, if your child does something 'bad' Do you stop loving that child? Even when they should be old enough to understand right and wrong?
I do believe alot of what organized religion teaches but I have to remember that the "Devil" or "Satan" never even existed in history until early Egyptian times. (That was brought about to control the masses.)
Spirituality is coming to the world. Some call it "New Age"
I prefer to think of it as a personal relationship with my Creator. The Lakota have a saying, in fact I believe all Native American nations have this statement or very similar. We Are All Related. We Are All One With the Creator (Universe, as some prefer)
I hope this helps.

The difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament is JESUS! Jesus came to redeem us from the Law of the old testament. We now live in the age of grace and mercy. We arent bound by the law that existed back then. In the old testament there were all kinds of things that you had to do to have your sin covered, Jesus blood has now covered our sins. We no longer have to go thru the rituals of the O.T.

The two go hand in hand. The old Testatment was the foundation for the New Testatment. Though the Old Testatment deals with the Law, the New Testatment deals with God's Grace. If God thought for one minute that we would not need the Old Testatment, He would not have allowed it to be in the Bible.
We need to read the Old Testatment as the foundation for what transpired in the New Testatment. From the Old to the New, Christ is in it and so was the blood.
Stoning was a law. And the Law was abolished with Christ..

I'm an atheist, but I've discussed this with some smart people who are believers.
The deal is, jesus came to be the forgiveness, etc.
Basically, the sins in the old testement are still sins, its just that jesus is now taking on the punishment for these sins in the form of his dieing on the cross.
I don't believe in God so its all non-sense to me, its just that there is some logic to it.
Theres more to it that I could get into having to do with Genesis and other things, but basically, its like, your example of the cheating wife, yeah its still a sin to have adultery but the deal is now I am not supposed to stone my wife and if my wife did cheat on me and asked forgiveness for her sin then jesus would pay the penalty.
Its wierd I know, but whatever.

Read it all. Then you will still be confused. There are inconsistencies that after intense study and study of history are still debatable or not resolved. Some, but few, churches have councils in place to form positions on issues that the Bible never contemplated because of current technology developments. It is not wrong to question or seek answers for the things you ask, and all Christians should do it as part of their religious development. That, however, does not mean a person cannot still be a Christian even if every question is unanswered.

Gal 3:24 So that the LAW (OT) become our SCHOOLMASTER to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
The Kingdom is taken From Jews and is given to a people who brings fruits! (Mat 21:43)
WE ARE UNDER A BETTER COVENANT!
We are not under Levitical Priesthood, we are under the priesthood of Christ, of the order of Melchizedek.
Heb 7:12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.
OT also helps us to learn from the stiff-neckned nature of Jewish people, which led to their destruction.
Jesus Loves You, so do I

If you are confused it could be because you are trying to use human logic to understand a spiritual matter. Why not just ask God to Inform you of Jesus through the Holy Spirit then shut up and listen.

You are confused about what, Your cheating wife and children or you cheating about yourself?
Does not seems to be clear for me.
What business these books have under the sun, if they do not teach you only about GOD and his nature and to teach about your wife and children? I do not seem to understand neither your old nor your new testaments?
I am even ridiculing the law of my land and constitution for not getting updated frequently to suit the needs of changing world and time. So where are these books to figure in that. All of them to me are outdated in terms of ordering the society to behave in some specific style or way. They are all out-fashioned.
Let me tell, even your popes and pontiffs have changed their views a numerous times in history to adopt to the changing times. Popes have changed their views on numerous scientific thoughts whilst for the same reason that a "Galileo" was punished by Rome.
