Washington DC is an independent city, and is not in any state (DC stands for District of Columbia). It is a self-governing entity, albeit with a lot of influence from the federal government. The land that is now DC was once part of Maryland back in the 18th century.

In 1787 when the constitution was adopted, the document included provisions for creating a federal district outside of the existing US States. That district became the District of Columbia, which is where the City of Washington, the Capital of the US, resides.

Both Maryland and Virginia gave up land to form the federal district - but the resulting district is NOT part of either state, but an entirely separate political entity.

The part of the district provided by Virginia was later returned to the state of Virginia, and is now Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia. But the district remains separate from any state.

It's not in any state. Its suburbs are in both Maryland and Virginia but the city is a district that's separate.

it's on the border of MD and VA so if you live in one of those states than DC is in your state, but otherwise D is considered sort of a state in it's self.
