Both of his parents are mentally retarded. They have a son that is 13 that is also retarded. Now he goes fine peeing but when they try to get him on the toilet he says no and screams. They've already tried spanking him and all he does is fall on the floor crying. Hes also figured out how to put the diapers on himself so he can now do it if they wont. They are on a shelf but the older brother always gets them for him. How do they get him to use the toilet for it. My wife said all they need to do is let him poop in his pants and wear it for a few days and let him get his butt chapped and he wont do it again. Is this a good idea? Need help A.S.A.P.

It is my business because they asked me for my help. The mother doesnt live with them, but their unretarded grandma, and their unretarded step mom both live with them. No they dont get any services beside a check in the mail.

Toilet training is always better done with rewards than punishment.

It seems he understands when he needs to go, so offer a reward that he realy wants for him doing it in the toilet, e.g. trip to McDonalds, favorite program on TV or similar. BUT make sure he doesn't get the treat until the required behaviour is acheived.

The problem is the age 13 is way too old he should have been toilet trained at 7-10 mths
Your wife's idea may work worth a shot,It sounds like some one needs to get this sorted out via a children's welfare authority as it sounds like the parents can`t cope rearing the child.
or don`t give him any diapers around so there is non to wear and the he may get the idea of what is required

He' 13??? Is he in school?...he at least should be going to a school for the handicapped. If he is..I'm sure somebody there wil notice this and give them some help with it. The parents should ask social services or teachers at school for help with this. What about his grandparents? They should be helping with it too. If they don't find a way to make him mind them, he might end up in foster care. By the way...the parents have to buy the diapers. Why don't they stop buying the diapers? You would think that by the time he "understands" about using the bathroom ..he'd want to do it the right way. Maybe it's just rebellious .I worked with the mentally retarded/physically handicapped.. some of them COULDN'T go to the bathroom by themselves...BUT the ones who COULD....DID.

If they are both mentally challenged, I'm sure there are social service people who are assisting them. It's not your responsibility (or your business), even though your intentions are altruistic.
