I just got a cheap Sony subwoofer. What does the phase knob do? I don't hear any difference, really, but I don't know what I should be listening for.

Since the subwoofer is made to be matched up with any suround sound system, they put the phase knob in to allow it to be compatible. When the subwoofer is out of phase with the rest of the speakers the bass sounds will sound weaker. When the subwoofer is in phase the bass sounds will sound stronger. You will have to play a DVD with bass sounds and try flipping the phase knob while you listen. One setting should sound better than the other.

Phase switch is so your subwoofer and speakers are in phase with each other.
In other words your speakers when playing move in and out, when in phase together they also move in and out at the same time ,or in phase .
Out of phase one moves in while the other moves out ,or out of phase.

It makes the cone on the sub woofer move in and out in step ( phase ) with the other speakers . You need to be a dedicated audiophile to discern the difference !!..
