Eye Doctors have a good life. General Practice, Gastro, Internal Med, Geriatrics are all good areas. You do not want to be a surgeon , gynecologist / obstretrician. too many people need late night procedures taht are not necesarily been planned.

Dermatologist do take call.

If you aren't willing to put in the time, then you probably shouldn't be a doctor. There is NO easy pathway through. Choosing based upon call is not the way to go. I'd focus on figuring out if you can put in the time and deal with it. Then decide whether to apply for medical school.

Plenty (I would say the majority) of doctors have families and have a family life. I'm sick of hearing that they cannot.

All specialties have doctors on-call. Not every practice does. A hospital anesthesiologist will be on call, but one who works in an outpatient clinic will not. A radiologist may be able to take call from home and read images that are digitally transmitted. Even being on-call is relative. There are few dermatological emergencies. Large group practices may have you on infrequent call.

I agree with dwp - if you aren't totally dedicated to medicine, don't even start. If you go into it half-***ed, you won't get far.

That being said, almost every doctor I know (and I know a lot) has a family. We all work hard, but most of us have pretty balanced lives.

If you want a 9-5 job, don't go into medicine.

family doctor's experience

this is a popular misconception that some people have, and from that, i know who are doctors and who aren't. In my job, i work one week, and i am off the next week. But, in the one week, i work like 70-80 hours. The next week i am off, and they rarely disturb me. It depends on the job. Can't beat experience can you?

What about radiologists? For the most part, they sit in a room and look at cool pictures. At the smaller hospitals, there may be some call but how much?

all doctors are on call. going into med school means that for at least 4 years of your life, you are a doctor. then you get your license, and can go into your own practice. go to work for a bank. they are never open when you really need them to be.
