I'm a 33 year old quiet guy who likes being that way too. You are not alone.
I have a wife, two kids, and a mother-in-law in my home, so I have to open up a little when it comes to making sure I spend quality time and communicating with my family; but otherwise I pretty much keep to myself. And I make no apologies for it.

why do you want people to tell you how to live YOUR life?
i have a lot of friends who are like that, and i don't really mind. sometimes it's hard getting them to answer but still i understand. and yeah if you're happy, there's nothing wrong with it!
being shy is not bad, it's usefull in some ways. my friend would understand you better because she's like this but oh well. i kinda get you too because i was once like this but now i'm loud, super loud. you can barely ever get me to shut up lol. well it's just cuz im a girl. anyways...
i don't have a problem if others are quiet. it's your life, and i'm fine with it.
remember! don't let anyone change the way you are!

It is fine to be shy and quiet, don't let anyone tell you that it isn;t. The bigger question is are you really happy this way? If you are, well then just be that way.
The only thing I wonder is if people say this to you because:
they think you would be happier if you changed
they are uncomfortable with you being this way
So if you honestly like yourself this way, feel you are doing more or less what you want in life and aren't taking advantage of anyone else, or letting anyone carry you, then, what the heck , just be the way you are.

Yes, that is annoying. I often have people tell me "smile" or "come on and laugh" just at the moment when I would prefer to be left alone with my thoughts. The creepiest is men who try to tease me or touch my face and say something like "give me a smile." I'd really rather give them a slap. There are a lot of people out there who don't understand why anyone would be quiet.

I think that's fine to feel that way.
Myself and my closest friend are this way. We don't have the desire to have a phone book full of friends because we're happy with ourselves. You can only have so much friendship to give, why spread it thin. Have a couple good friends and spend the rest of your time by yourself doing what you want. As long as your happy, right?
Yes, being shy and quiet isn't going to get girls. But as long as you accept that your not going to meet someone without actually trying, then everything is fine, again, as long as your happy.
Do what you do and enjoy life and the joys it brings, by yourself since your comfortable with it.

I am one of those quiet people.. I have fun and do things yet im quiet and unobtrusive. I like the solitude life... I cannot stand drama and being quiet is a great way to keep drama away. People say that to me also.. to open up, Some people just dont get it. I hear ya though... people just dont understand because they think that quiet is associated with being unhappy when its so untrue. BE HAPPY AND QUIET ITS WHO YOU ARE!!!!! :) My husband is quiet also :)

There's nothing wrong with keeping to yourself and being quiet..
So now, there's something wrong with people when they don't want to be loud and immature and be the center of attention? Puh-lease..you're fine the way you are..
People are stupid..
And by the way, some chicks dig the shy-guy thing..I do..

They probably don't know that you like to be shy and stuff,
they might just be trying to get you to open up because they don't think your comfortable in the situation.

i think its that some people, when you don't talk or ingage in conversations with them, they get the impression that you dislike him/her or they feel ignored. But, hey i know what your going through, im a shy/quiet guy too, and glad that you are comfortable with who you are.
