Ok, first of all, I'm only 16. But in the past few years I've found that I have SERIOUSLY bad short-term memory. I will literally find myself standing in the middle of a room without being able to remember what I got up for. I have a hard time remembering the names of celebrities, historical facts (big problem on tests!), things like that...It's gotten really worse in the past year.

But I saw something the other day about stress causing short-term memory issues and I wondered if that could be the problem; I do have a fairly rigorous academic schedule and a new job. Or could it be something else? Has anyone else had this same experience? Help!

Yep, you pretty much nailed it on the head. Stress causes a lot of problems and one major one is short term memory loss. Your mind becomes too overwhelmed to think straight. Be sure to take breaks when you can to relax. Even at 16 your mind can get way overwhelmed and in some cases more than most. Just do your best to try and get some rest to ease that stress.. Good luck!

Oh, yes, yes, yes. Stress definitely has an effect on short term memory. You tend to eat a worse diet when you are stressed, and get less sleep. Plus, your mind is juggling more.

If the problem isn't really affecting your life, try to get some more sleep, look into yoga as a way to calm the mind, and try to cut back on sugar/fried things, and add more veggies and fish to your diet.

If you are still having problems -- or the problem really is affecting your life -- go see a doctor. S/he can rule out any underlying health problems, which would be a great relief, right? You might also try talking to your school counsellor.

Welcome to the world of being an adult! Stress is an everyday part of life for adults who lead complicated lives...and yours sounds like it is there.

And stress can directly effect your short-term memory. How do you make it better? Eliminate some of the stress and then find healthy ways to cope with the stress that you have to deal with.

Look at your schedule and see if there are things you are committed to that can be minimized or eliminated. Perhaps some things can be put on hold while school is in session and then you can get involved again on breaks and holidays.

One warning--don't eliminate all fun as activities in this process. Balancing grown-up responsibilities with fun is a challenge you will face your entire life. Fun--being social, getting exercise, time alone--is equally important in stress management.

I'm kinda having the same problem started a year or so ago not as severe and it may just be normal but if someone came and asked me right now what I ate for dinner yesterday or what I did this morning I would seriously have to think and after I would have a headache does that happen to you? I tend to stress out alot so that could be it. I write alot of things down now and keep it with me, maybe that will help. Or maybe you just need a break.
