Places on your spinal cord aren't too bad. It HURTS! dont get the wrong idea here.
Parts of the body farther away from your spine hurt the most.
personally, i have one right above my vagina & it did not hurt nearly as bad as i had thought.
But remember to get something you really like, you will have it for the rest of your life && surgically removing it is worse than getting it done!
Good luck!

It actually depends on your own sensitivity, among other things. For some-- it hurts like hell. For others-- it's awfully annoying but not too terribly painful. For me? It felt like a cat scratching me over and over again until it hit the bone area furthest away from the center (spine), then it bothered me for a minute or two but was gone soon after. I however have a high tolerance for pain and can withstand more than usual.

Afterwards-- it feels like a minor burn but the ointments and covers you are given should really help alleviate the 'discomfort'. Avoid sleeping on your back if possible (I slept on mine by mistake and have a replica on my tee- years later) and don't expose it to the sun initially.

Don't be discouraged by the great bastard above- it's in an area which can easily be covered and even still it's your decision- and if you have carefully considered it, who cares about everyone else? As long as it means something to you.

Before you get it done- please research the parlors- lisenses, certificates, portfolio's, and proper health conditions (as that can also affect the outcome of your tattoo). Remember, places that have piercing, tattoos and a shop all in one structure aren't the best places to get it done as they have no primary focus. Good luck!

Only you can determine the sensitiveness. I have had about 2/3 of my back done and didnt feel most of it. the arms are not that bad. Where you have more muscle, generally tend to be less sensitive. My tattoo artist says that there is an oinment that they can apply that numbs the skin, but the only requirement is that is wont work until the skins is been broken or open up by the needle.

I have one right between my shoulder blades and I really think the only thing part that really hurt was when he was working the furthest away from my spine. The outline was the worst part of course but after that everything became pretty much numb. I knew what to expect since that was my 3rd but it was also my largest one. Like others have said, make sure it's something meaningful to you and something you really like b/c having it removed is a lot worse than getting it done. Good Luck!

I got a tat today, and I'll tell you... it was uber painful.
I got it on my stomach and It was so hard to bend... I can't imagine having on on my back and having to lean against it.

I was told that where I got mine was a more painful area to get a tat done.
My friend got one behind her ear and it didn't hurt that much for her. She said it felt like a weird tickling.

My tattoo is only about 2 inches by 2 inches, so remember that if you don't want to be sitting with pain for a long time... get a smaller one.

I don't want to emphasize what it felt like because it might be different for you, depending on where your nerves are and your pain tolerance.

One thing that helped me with the pain was focusing on breathing... wow... it helped.

Just get your mind off the pain and it's way better.

umm just got mine done this friday makin it my 6th tattoo and even thought my artist says i take pain well and this is true i must admit i handled the pain during the tattoo well but it did hurt, that area seemed very sensitive my nerves in my arm reacted and started to ache and 3 days later im still sore and stiff, it all depends on your pain tolerance, i did not cry or fidgit but you could sense the pain in the emotions of my facial expressions

i have one on my upper middle back...took an hour and has a lot of black in it which hurts the most cos they have to keep going over and over it. had tears in my eyes! it hurt...but hey, it's like sanding away eep into ur skin...it's gonna hurt!

but the biggest thing is i regret it totally now (got it five years ago) makes me look like a junkie...hate wearing singlet tops now cos it's placed so i can't hide it!

however i have a lower back one too and that didn't hurt at all, and i don't regret getting it

Just remember that you have the potential to give live birth, and this is nothing in comparison. It doesn't hurt once you get into the groove of it (you kinda go numb), but the hammering on your spine is annoying

if you can handle pain mild. It will hurt more than getting one on your arm. It's on the bone so its going to hurt no matter how much you can take the pain.
