Well it is not like you have a lot of choice, there being one national passenger rail service, Via Rail. You can not go coast to coast without changing trains however. You'd need to do Halifax to Montreal. Montreal to Toronto. Toronto to Vancouver (or the other way around).

I highly recommend the only coast to coast Canadian rail trip.

as the others point out, there is not a lot of choice.

there are a few alternate options: instead of Montreal-Halifax, you could do Montreal-Gaspe (ends on the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Quebec; east coast, although not as far east as Halifax). Also, instead of Vancouver-Toronto, you can do Prince Rupert to Jasper, AB, and Jasper-Toronto (the Prince rupert-Jasper run stops for the night in Prince George, where you would need to find lodgings; this stop allows you to see more mountain scenery than you would otherwise). As a third option, you can take BC Rail from North Vancouver to Prince George, rather than doing the Prince George-Prince Rupert section.

I would caution against gonig un summer; prices are pretty high (they're high anyway, actually).

you should compare railpass prices (good for 12 days of travel; reserved ahead) to regular fares. coach seats are tolerable for sleeping; cabin fares are a lot pricier than even the fares.
