I have given my social security number to many companies. However, what happens when you give it to them? I once gave it to a paramedic...why would he need for? What can a EMT do with my social security number? Does my social security number become tied up in state and federal records? Will government officials be able to see my social security number now that has it been given? Or is there some sort of privacy for the holder of a social security number? When and how do they look for it when necessary?? Any answers??

You only have to give your name, DOB and ID card to an officer. Nothing else is required by law.

The ssn is give to medical personel because many people have the same name and it is used to reference which person recieved medical attention and assists with maintaining records for future treatment. Any government agency can request it as well as financial institutes. Always ask for the purpose and if it's not a well known company do your research first. Law enforcement use it to track wants and warrants and criminal history.

Only give it to the military, IRS, employer.

Do NOT give it to companies unless they have something directly to do with you (employer)

EMT is fine, he used it to look you up on a government database (same one used to classify, documents of any kind like speeding tickets, criminal records)

Government can get hold of you SSN anytime they need or want to. It would be illogical to worry about the government abusing it because they have no reason to.

Don't worry unless you have written it over the internet or given it to someone asking for it for a stupid reason (i.e "Hi sir! Will you give me your SSN so I can send you some money??)

You're fine.
