everyone is different, and the quality of your sleep has a lot to do with it as well. i can run on as little as 3. i did that for an entire summer. it depends on your mattress, how warm or cold you are, and everything else that factors into your comfort. there have been studies done that people that get 6 hours of sleep actually out live people who sleep 8 hours a day. changing your sleep schedule is hard to do all at once. since school is getting ready to start, i would ease into it by staying up a little later each night until you get a feel for it. it will still take some time, but eventually your body adjusts. your body will train itself to fall into the deeper levels of sleep quicker than you do now, so you get the same quality sleep in a shorter period of time. try avoiding caffiene and alcohol. they affect your sleep patterns. this may sound like it has nothing to do with it, but drinking more water a day helps with sleep as well. it will cut out the soda, but basically a healthier diet means you wont need as much sleep

Every person is different. Most people require 8-10 hours of sleep each night. But being tired all the time isn't just do to lack of sleep it is also related to diet and exercise. If you eat junk food then you feel like junk. If you don't exercise then you don't have energy. You should avoid junk food, exercise 3-4 times a week for about 30-45 minutes, and sleep at least 8 hours a night a you will feel better.

Well, go ahead and see what happens when you only get 5 or 6 hours of sleep per night if you want to.(I recommend at least 8 hours each night) You are young and you will learn to adapt to it by starting a coffee habit.
Here are some good ideas:
1. Do something that gets your heart rate up a bit like, walking, running, biking, and swimming.
2. Eat Whole, Organic foods like: Broccoli, Cabbage, Organic Brown Rice, Spinach, Sweet Potato, Apples, and other fruits and vegetables in their Natural State.
3. Avoid eating corn, white bread, white rice, candy, sodas, chips, and anything else that you already know you shouldn’t be eating.
4. Drink clean water as your beverage of choice. Avoid Fruit drinks and fruit juices (unless YOU juice them yourself)
5. Stop smoking, drinking beer & wine, and drinking coffee.
6. Get 8 hours of sleep each night.
7. Hang out with people who want to be healthy.
8. Avoid anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup.
Tone up the muscles:
1. Join a gym and get a trainer.
2. If you’re short on cash, start a light stretching & yoga regimen.
3. Do push-ups, and light dumbbell curls for the upper body.
4. As I said above, walk, run, swim, and or bike.
5. Take an aerobics class, a yoga class, or some other fitness class.
6. Join the local YMCA..
Mental Health:
1. Get a friend to talk to each day about your feelings.
2. If you have some money or insurance, get a counselor to talk to.
3. Learn how to meditate.
4. Join a support group for the issue you’re dealing with.
5. Ask your Higher Self (or God) for guidance.
6. Start keeping a diary or journal about your feelings & thoughts.
7. Write a ‘gratitude’ list every night.
8. Do something that makes you happy each day like: listen to your favorite music, draw, paint, write, or anything creative.
9. Do something for someone else who needs help.

Everybody is different. People always say 8 hrs but that isn't always true. Teens do need about 8-10 hrs but everybody is wired differently. It also depends how much physical activity you are doing. More exercise = less and better quality sleep. If you get cranky from not enough sleep then you probably need more than 5 hrs. Diet plays a role too. Lots of sugars from processed food and soft drinks gives you a rush but they leave you feeling lethargic and tired when you crash and they make your sleep less satisfying.

I only have about 6 hours and i am never cranky and rarely feel tired either, so that to me is good. People say 8 hours is good but 9-10 is good- you fdon't want to sleep so much that you feel tired (sounds crazy but it's true, how after sleeeping all day you get dozy and a headache) anyway, no more than 10 hours a night is good!
Hope this helps you,
Tasha.

We all get busy and don't always get the sleep we need but you need to be sure to get a minimum of 7 hours a night. There is significant evidence that getting less than 6-7 hours a night will cause long term damage to your body systems. Not only that but adequate sleep help you think, act, respond, and function better.

9-10 is best for a girl your age. Eight at the bare minimum.
Your cousin is a rare exception.
If your body naturally wakes at about 9-10 hours, then that is exactly what you need.
Don't fight your body. It knows what it needs. Treat it right. It's yours for life.
