The answer depends on where in the Bible you look.

In the Ethical Decalogue, the first commandment is,
"I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me." (Exodus 20:2-3, KJV. Also, Deut. 5:6-7)

The Ritual Decalogue commandment is similar:
"For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:" (Exodus 34:14, KJV)

When Jesus was confronted by the Pharisees, and asked to name the greatest commandment, He answered, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment." (Matt. 22:37-38, KJV. Also Mark 12:30 and Luke 10:27) This is a quote of Deuteronomy 6:5, "And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." (KJV)

Essentially, they are all saying the same thing. We are to worship only the Lord God and nothing in our lives should be put before Him.

Annie answered your additional question very well, so I won't try to add anything to that.
Hope this answers your questions.

You shall have no other gods before me. This was not saying that other gods exist, but that the Israelites were not to follow the traditions of the pagan nations around them (like the one they had just come out of-Egypt and all their false gods) and go after false gods and the worshipping of them. Seems Satan was quite busy setting up false god worship among the ancient peoples of that part of the world, and God told the jews not to have any part in it whatsoever. They did anyway, hence all the accounts of God throttling them in the manner He did. It was a very serious matter to God as is evident by the number of people who were destroyed after Moses came down from receiving the Ten commandments. Some fools just never learn, I guess. Look around you today.

the First Commandment in Christianity would depend upon which denomination you are apart. Different sects word it differently. Secondly it would also depends upon which Covanent a person is using. In Deuteronomy, there are 613 commandments; while in the covanent given by "Jesus' there are only 2 commandments.

Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Notice the little "g" in "gods". In the bible, when referring to the Holy God, "God" is always spelled with a big "G". When referring to false gods, such as those worshiped by pagans and represented by idols and graven images and other non-living objects, the word "god" was always spelled with a little "g".

I hope this answers your question.

Matthew 22
35. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36. Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37. Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38. This is the first and great commandment.
39. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

In short: Love God. That's the first and greatest commandment.

But if you refer to the 10 commandments in Exodus, the first one is "Thou shalt have no other gods before me"
