ok maybe i should have been a little more specific, he is walking... he gets up and can take a few steps, he just would rather crawl than just take off, he has plenty of open space and room to move around, he just would rather crawl than walk

Every child is different.

My daughter started walking at 10 months. Seemed like overnight really- and just took off!

My son... practiced and practiced and practiced and practiced some more. We finally had unassisted steps at around 15 months- with REAL walking all the time (no crawling) at 16 1/2 months.

My daughters personality has always been driven- she takes on new things and challenges with force! She'll either accomplish something right away- or she gives up and tries again LATER.

My son- practices and practices until he accomplishes. He checks everything out - the new things, challenges and tries to figure things out before he accomplishes. & He doesn't give up!

Different personalities lead to different milestone ages!

daughter rolled over at 3 months, first word at 9 months, crawled at 8 months, walked at 10 etc.

Son rolled over at 4-5 months, crawled at 10 months, first word at 10 months, walked at 15-16 months!

Unless they are reverting at such a young age- or they don't seem to have the muscle strength- can stand at 15 months etc. It shouldn't be much of a concern. If they are having these types of troubles- check wtih your pediatrician.

EDIT::
You added that your son is walking- but prefers crawling- I'll refer to my son once again-. He could take steps unassisted at 14 months- 15 months more frequently- but he'd PREFER to crawl. I always say he REALLY started walking at 16 1/2 months b/c its when crawling finally went out of the window.

Keep encouraging him- its something new- and can be a bit scary for some kids- and SLOWER- crawling for toddlers can be faster so they'll use the mode of transportation more readily until they can walk faster! =) I wouldn't worry!

I just recently asked this question and got an amazing response. My third baby (daughter) didn't start walking until she was 16 months. She took her first steps at 14 months and would take a few here and there. She wouldn't do it full time though until she was 16 months. She just turned 17 months on the 14th and is now trying to walk really fast. It's hilarious. Don't worry he'll be walking before you know it.

Yea, put him down and let him explore. Are you the parent that does not want the baby to hurt themselves. Kids need to be able to learn what the limits are. Don't let him jerk the table clothe from the table, but if he is not allowed to crawl around and pull up to stuff and try to stand alone then he will not learn to walk. They don't just wake up one morning and ShaZaaam He can walk. Nope not that easy. Give him every opportunity you can to let him get down. In the kitchen, in the Bedroom. Everywhere that is clean and safe. I had a friend that asked why her 2 year old does not talk. WELL DUH Take the pacifier from the lil squirt he may say something.

There's nothing wrong with him (Physically). Some children don't start walking until they are at least 18 months.
If your Son is using a "Walker",then let him continue to use it,until he outgrows it. You will know this because:
(1) He will walk without holding on to it.
(2) The Activity Table will be below his waist, while he's standing straight up.
A Walker gives a baby freedom to move, and security from falling. You can also take him out of it,and start letting him stand up along-side of the furniture. Slowly start to walk away from him. When he gets on his knees, wanting to crawl, then stand him back up again. He will soon get the idea!.
(Note:) Children learn to walk faster, when they are around other children who are running and playing, because the child wants to "keep-up" with the other children.
(GOOD LUCK!)

Definitely talk with your son's pediatrician. There might not be anything wrong with him, but he might also have some sort of developmental delay. With delays, the earlier you catch them the better.

Most children learn to walk between 9 and 16 months, and premature babies can be even later. If he's doing things like cruising along furniture and walking behind a push-toy, I wouldn't be too worried. In any case, your first line of defense is your pediatrician -- if they aren't worried, I wouldn't be either.

Dr's don't usually worry until 18 months. That is when a lot of kids in my family started walking. Make sure you are letting your little boy have lots of floor time and he has things to pullup with so he can pratice standing. Is he walking with holding on to things? Hold on to his hands and walk around with him when ever he is willing to do it. Lay him on his back and excercise his legs by moving them in a pedel motion. Don't use walkers or those seats like walkers without wheels. The more active he is the more likely he will walk.

My son did not walk untill 17 months.
As above, every child develops at their own pace. Don't worry about it.
I determined that his slow pace was due to me crafting a floor covering that did not allow him to crawl when he should have started.
Therefore I blame myself.
As soon as we put a laminate down, and he had a smooth finish to work with, he was on his way.

My oldest sister was walking at 9 months, my brother at 12 months, me at 13 months and our other sister was 16 months and she is the healthiest of all 4 of us kids. She got good grades, played sports in school. She is the only one of us that has not become a diabetic (Runs in our family)

Every child reaches milestones at different ages. Both of my girls walked at 13 months. If you are concerned, I would contact your pediatrician.
