swimming is great for cardio and for increasing sport specific strength.

swimming will only be beneficial for "you" to aid in weight management if you are an efficient swimmer AND you are following a controlled diet. also if you are not conditioned to the exercise it will provide little benefits as you will not be able to perform it at a high enough level of intensity.

there are tons of medical studies that show that when comparing running, cycling and swimming the swimmers reduced the body fat by far less than the other two types of exercise when it was the sole source of exercise.

Swimming is one of those activities that works the entire body. It helps the abs, the arms, the legs, and the cardiovascular system. Wow!

What does it not help?
It helps your lungs by regulating breathing and increasing lung capacity. It helps your heart, as all repetative, even-energy exercises do.
It strengthens your arms, legs, back, and stomach, and everything in between. No matter what stroke you use, any way you swim is a good way.

Every single bone and muscle in your body is helped. Including all your organs. Swimming is a cardiovascular workout and your heart will thank you.

My husband agreed with the previous answer and told me to add that is one of the lowest impact cardiovascular exercises you can do. He swam competitively for 10 years, which has given him so very broad shoulders.
