rogerguiles: that is a good question. I think logically that most of the money from street drugs that are sold stays in the country that they are sold in. Because there is a long tail distribution network of drug dealing only a small % of the money actually goes to the source countries or even to the big drug traffikers.

Some days ago in another question, I made reference to this. In Mexico, remittances are called "remesas", and according to the press it practically represents the 3rd largest industry in the country, after oil and tourism. And taking into account that Mexico is the 13th largest economy of the world, you can imagine how much that single slot represents. Now add other economies like Brazil, India or Russia.

I think remittances represents how intertwined different economies are and hence how mutually dependent they are. That's why I insist this is not a hole that can be covered with one single hand. And why immigration is mostly a natural condition of humankind that is used for political purposes to gain postures for certain political parties.

Regarding Rogergiles's comment, this money does not represent money laundring, it's entirely different. There are American companies devoted to do this kind of business, like West Union, and that's how lots of these transactions are being measured. Money coming from drugs, counterfeit or illegal pornography (ie, child pornography), normally is transferred via money laundry and not regular banking systems.

although it may cause a slight imbalance in the economic world, there is nothing illegal about immigrants sending money to another country. plus, i personally have never experienced a shift in the economy worth noticing with the exception of normal fluctuations
