My cat won't eat or drink, his temperature is low and he is dehydrated, he also has ulcers on his tongue. Any ideas?
Does anyone know what could cause this? I took him to the emergency vet today and they wanted $459 to run blood work and told me it would cost me about $1,000 for everything. I can't afford that! If someone could tell me what this might be this would be great instead of just putting him to sleep without knowing!

Also he has been crying for the last 2 days. The 1st day I thought it was because he was tired of the dog bothering him. But then today I noticed that wasn't the case.

How old is he?

There could be many causes for his not eating or drinking, but the ulcers in his mouth make me think of end-stage kidney disease. Mouth ulcers could also go with corona virus disease.

The low temperature is a very bad sign, I'm sorry to say. I think he is approaching the end of his life, and since he's crying, he's suffering. I think it's time to have him put to sleep.

I'm very sorry.

I don't know what is wrong with your cat but it's obvious it's sick, and I know you already know that. The regular vet is going to run you too, so maybe you can ask for a payment plan? Or maybe a reduced rate? I think it's pretty obvious that the mouth ulcers are preventing him from eating. He has to eat, the alternative is death. If you can't afford the vet's bills maybe you could take him to a no kill shelter for treatment if there is one in your area, you could probably look it up on the net or ask you vets. You wouldn't get him back but at least you would know he was getting the medical attention he needs.

How long has the cat been like this? Did it develop quickly or gradually?
There are a variety of things that could be wrong and only a vet can tell you for sure. He may have something as simple as a food allergy. In the meantime try to keep him hydrated by giving him some soft canned food with a little water added. Call your regular vet in the morning.

I'm no pro, but I love my cats too. Did you cat get into some poison? How long has it been like this? I also know what it is like to not to be able to afford the luxury of vet bills. We do have to make hard decisions sometimes. Can you put a drop of water on it's tongue? I would just take care of him the best you can and see what happens. Good Luck

He could have gotten into something caustic and burned his mouth--which happened to a neighbor's cat (chewed on a battery we thought). The vet used a cortesone shot and some other things and it helped the cat in two days to get back to eating.

Ulcers in the mouth could be stomatitis. The vet should be ruling this out first. The blood tests are a good thing, they show anything from poison to god knows what. I hope they gave him fluids.

Liquify his food and use an eyedropper or syringe to get food in him, he does have to eat.

With just those few symptoms to go on, I would guess your cat has FCV, Feline Calicivirus. It is highly virulent and has a high mortality rate. The reason it will cost so much to try and help your cat is that there are no magic cures for this. It amounts to supportive therapy such as intravenous fluids, antibiotics for secondary infections, and oxygen.

Emergency clinics cost more than a regular vet, so why didn't you take your cat Friday, or Saturday...??? Take the cat to your regular vet 1st thing tomorrow!!
