Don't give us humans too much credit.
People in power are too selfish and single-minded to care about the consequences of their actions to be able to know that they are contributing to our ultimate demise.

No, no sane person wants that, and there aren't really as many evil geniuses in the world as it may seem from reading the newspapers. What brings about such crises is not a self-destructive attitude, but a selfish one. People thinking only of themselves and their interests and refusing to think about the big picture and the needs of others. That is the kind of thinking that drags humanity to the brink.
