Last year my family received a large tax return- My husband is in the Army and doesn't make much money and he claimed myself an our 2 kids. This year I'm not sure what will happen bc he is deployed to Iraq and they didn't take taxes out of his check... How will I know if I get a return or not-I think we have gotten around 1300.00 this year with 2 kids and I dont work
Thanks

While he's in a combat zone, his pay is non-taxable which is why they aren't taking money out. If nothing is being deducted, though, then it probably would decrease your refund.

If you are eligible for an earned income credit, you can choose to include the non-taxable combat pay in the calculation for EIC. Be sure to figure the EIC both ways, with and without the combat pay, to see which gets you the larger EIC.

Good luck... and I hope your husband comes home safely.

The IRS does not require that you file a tax return unless your gross income (everything you make) is over a certain amount per year. So it depends on what your total annual income is. But if you have taxes taken out of your pay check, you generally want to file to get a refund. It doesn't look like you are making a lot of money. Having dependents such as your kids will also increase your tax deductions. It is hard to give you a definite answer without knowing exactly what your total income will be. If their not taking taxes you're earning more funds....whats up, you need to put the money they took last year in a 401.
