My biggest hobby is photography and im pretty good at it. However I have always done it just for fun never anything else. A girl I work with has asked me to take pictures at her daughter's 5th birthday party and asked me what I charge. I dont know how much to charge her?

Since you know the woman you are shooting for and you will mostly be shooting an event (more or less candid pictures) and nothing being done in a studio. You could come up with a flat rate and put all the images (full resolution) on a CD for her and let her print what she wants at her expense. Or you could put all of the images (low resolution) on a CD and then she can tell you which pictures and how many she wants.

Since this is your first paid session I would not charge her to much since you work with this woman and I also assume she maybe a friend of yours. For a child's birthday party I would stay in the area about $50 and this would just cover your time.

Some will disagree with me about charging more but I think since you are just starting out this will be a good place to start so you will know what to do next time.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

I think it totally depends on the shoot, and how much work you're getting as a photographer. If you have a waiting list, you should be bumping your charge higher. Ask other photographers in your area what they charge for studio shoots. If you are getting a few jobs here and there throughout the year, you should consider yourself an amateur. But if the job takes you more than 5 hours I'd say go by an hourly wage of $15-20. If it's less then stick with a base charge. This is coming from a freelance artist's perspective, which is related, but is a different field. Hope it helps

If you're digital, I would just do the shoot and provide an edited CD. If you're good, she will show her pictures and recommend you, and you can get more business. Photoace is a professional, and should charge handsomely for a party shoot, but as an amateur, I think you should do the first one on the house, or tell her she can tip you if she likes the work.

If you are film, I would charge to cover the price of the film and printing.

If you do decide to charge, I wouldn't ask more than $50.

charge based on cost of your time, experience, technical ability and quality of final product

pretty good at it? so is everyone that owns a camera,

i imagine you will need to use alot of flash and think about your view points

whats the person expect to pay? I always ask for as much as I can get, when I know I can deliver, your case maybe different.

Im not in america so I would say what ever number Photoace gave you is good.

Well, do you take good images? The reason why I ask this, is because, you don't want to charge your friend if all your pics come out bland, tasteless, or just plain crappy.

Amateur's don't get paid that's why they are called amateurs. If you take money for your services then you are a professional. Thereby fully responsible for the quality of your work and the satisfaction of your customer. If you want to tell this friend "pay for my expenses and we will see if you want to give me a tip when the pics are done" that would be OK.
