Get a daily devotion book and follow through with it in your Bible. Soon you'll find yourself in the habit of reading your Bible. Isn't it amazing you read one passage and soon you find yourself into cross reference. Then you get deeper and deeper into reading your Word.

If you want to be wise...read a portion of the book of Proverbs every day. The book of Psalms is an interesting look at David...(a shepherd who would become King - he is a human with emotions that most of us can relate to).
To find out who Jesus is, try the New Testament, and start in the Gospel of John (the red letter edition of the Bible is good, as the red letters are the words of Jesus)!!
If you are looking for a good modern translation, try "The Message Bible."

Read about a few chapters a day, and try to memorize the books of the bible, start with 5 books at a time, after you have the first 5 books memorized add 5 more and the 5 more until you know all of them, do not rush but take your time.

Dear in Christ,
1) Put aside all PRE-CONCEIVED IDEAS
2) Use a software like e-sword - analyze word to word.
3) Mark the porions that you cannot accept / understand.
4) Use a Bible without footnotes - you will tend to accept the editor's view which can be wrong as well.
5) Use more than one version.

Get a list of all the chapters in the Bible, then cross them off each year as you read them.
I would definitely start off with Genesis 1 and John 1 each year.
No need to follow a set pattern. When you read any passage, ask yourself "What is the point this passage is making?"

I agree with zeal4him. Read a portion of the Old Testament and New Testament each day. However, at some point, you are going to need some sort of Commentary to assist understanding.

I would suggest as a companion study aid, that you buy a Matthew-Henry Commentary. It goes into far more detail and explanation of what you read in the Bible and provides context which is critical to understanding.

Believe every word without question, if you show doubt you can't be a believer, that's the Catch 22 of religions.

I would suggest praying before you read. Ask God to help you understand what you will be reading, and to help you use the principles you will be learning.
